The ABPM Aerospace Medicine certification examination combines specialty and Core Preventive Medicine content in one 200-question exam. Prepare from both official outlines, then check the application pathway that matches your training and experience. The 2026 registration deadline has passed; registered candidates should follow their current examination instructions.
What should you expect in the examination?
ABPM’s Core Examination FAQ describes 200 questions: 50 covering Core content and 150 covering specialty content, with one aggregated score.
The stated duration is 4.5 hours, including a 15-minute orientation tutorial and one 15-minute break. Keep those components in mind when planning question-answering time.
Since the 2022 cycle, candidates take a combined specialty examination. There is no separate Core examination to schedule. ABPM directs candidates to review both the specialty and Core content outlines.

Identify the eligibility pathway that fits your record
ABPM lists Residency, Complementary, Special and International Medical Graduate pathways. Their licence, training, coursework and practice conditions differ.
The Residency pathway is for graduates of qualifying accredited aerospace medicine residency programmes. The Complementary pathway provides a route for eligible physicians entering preventive medicine after other training.
The Special pathway is for physicians currently certified in another ABPM primary specialty. The IMG pathway has its own requirements for qualifying international training and certification.
Use the official eligibility table and the detailed conditions for your selected pathway. In particular, do not apply the US/Canadian licence or graduate-coursework wording as a universal rule: the IMG and Special pathways have distinct provisions. Check the documents, references, practice recency and any re-entry requirements that apply to your situation.

Use the five-domain specialty outline
The published Aerospace Medicine outline groups the specialty content into five domains. Review each domain’s detailed topics alongside the separate Core outline.
| Specialty domain | Published weight | Preparation scope |
|---|---|---|
| The Human within the Flight Environment | 20% | Flight and spaceflight fundamentals, aerospace stressors and physiological effects |
| Clinical Aerospace Medicine | 33% | Fitness for duty, waivers and clearances, wellness and care in aerospace settings |
| Operational Aerospace Medicine | 15% | Military, civil and space operations, selection, survival and mishap investigation |
| Risk Assessment and Management | 17% | Risk methods, human factors, root cause analysis and fatigue management |
| Leadership, Management, and Administration | 15% | Regulations, safety management, relevant agencies and leadership |

Turn the outlines into a preparation plan
Use the published weights together with your own knowledge gaps to choose priorities. Keep Core content in the plan from the beginning.
For each topic, check whether you can explain the concept, interpret relevant information and recognise the limits of an inference. Your training and appropriate clinical or aerospace references provide the technical detail beyond the outline headings.
For example, organise the flight-environment topics by the exposures and physiological effects listed in the outline. For operational and risk topics, distinguish the purpose of each assessment or investigation method before working supported scenarios.
The percentages help describe relative emphasis. Do not promise an exact question count for every subtopic by multiplying a percentage by the overall test length.
After a practice set, identify which outline topic and reasoning step caused each error. Revisit those points and try another supported example. This is optional study advice, not an ABPM-prescribed timetable.

Practice: recognise an overlapping outline topic
This original exercise asks you to read the published topic map, rather than infer a clinical or operational rule from a heading.
Practice exercise
Using the ABPM Aerospace Medicine outline, locate the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS). Is it listed only in Risk Assessment and Management, or also in Operational Aerospace Medicine? Give the two relevant contexts.
Show answer
It appears in both: operational mishap response and investigation, and risk assessment’s human-factors taxonomies.
The outline names HFACS at K3.K.6 under operational mishap response and investigation, and at K4.A.4 under human-factors taxonomies in Risk Assessment and Management. A topic can therefore cross domain boundaries. Its name alone does not establish the context of a future question or provide instructions for conducting an investigation.
Check the dates for your own cycle
For 2026, ABPM lists administration at Pearson VUE centres from October 12 through November 1, with an examination fee of $2,150.
Registration ran from May 20 through September 11, 2026 and has closed. Registered candidates should check their appointment and the September 25 withdrawal deadline against the current instructions.
If you are planning a later application, the Aerospace Medicine page offers notifications for the 2027 application period. Use the new cycle’s published requirements, dates and fees when available; this guide does not establish those future arrangements.

Your preparation checklist
Connect your application requirements with complete coverage of the examination.
- Identify the correct pathway and check every required document and condition.
- Download both the Aerospace Medicine and Core Preventive Medicine outlines.
- Review all five specialty domains and the Core content.
- Use appropriate references for the technical detail behind the outline headings.
- Practise interpreting complete scenarios without assuming a unique answer from a topic label.
- Confirm your cycle’s registration, appointment, fees and withdrawal instructions.
